A fantastic return from Niki Moss after being on hiatus for five years, “Getting to the Bottom” fuses playful synth tones and hazy guitar atmospherics with the artist’s harmoniously melodic vocals.
The project represents the alter ego of Miguel Vilhena, also the lead vocalist of the psych-rock band Savanna and producer of various Portuguese indie bands. “Getting to the Bottom” serves as the first single from the project’s upcoming new album, which thematically focuses on endings — “the end of relationships, cycles, and versions of ourselves that no longer make sense. It is not about endings as a final full stop, but about everything that comes after: the discomfort, the clarity, and the possibility of reinvention, that strange force that emerges when there is nothing left to preserve.”
“Raining on the visor, rushing through the traffic,” the vocals begin alongside the memorable synth and guitar interplay, bridging day-in-the-life tumult with smitten sentiments, its “anyway I follow” adoration bolstered by vibrant synth tones. Feedback-ready guitar ensues, as does harmonious vocal dreaminess, into the hooky title-bearing refrain. “Getting to the Bottom” is another infectious, artful standout from Niki Moss, who has caught our ears with past successes like “Avalanches” and “Standing In The Dark II.”
