grinning – “monster”

A pulsing, brisk rock energy persists throughout “monster,” a catchy recent single from grinning, the project from Nashville-based musicians Davis Gestiehr and Roger Ploch. Drawing from both the rhythmic punchiness of Bloc Party and moody post-punk pull of Interpol, grinning excels with a charismatic rock production throughout the track — kickstarted by a propulsive percussive force then moves into hazy bass panting and twangy guitar tones.

“I always lose what I once held in my hand,” debonair vocals lament, ascending thereafter into further fuzzy bass and clanging guitar synergy. The “I’ve been waiting…” chorus invigorates with the uptick in vocal emotion and guitar-laden vibrancy. The track has us firmly anticipating what’s next from grinning, who look poised to continue growing in the Nashville scene and well beyond.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
