SLEEP CLUB – “Weight Of Ease”

Balancing a lushly hypnotic delivery with dynamic rock spells, from shoegaze-y textures to alt-rock ardor, “Weight of Ease” is a consuming new track from SLEEP CLUB. Representing the solo project of Matt Jones, who is also a member of The High Lines, SLEEP CLUB is preparing to release a debut album, from which “Weight of Ease” is the second and penultimate single. Jones describes the track as “a reflection on the cost of a frictionless life, where increasingly we are told that easier is better, effort is undesirable. Time slipping away without memory or mark.”

Hazy strums of guitar exude a late-night soundscape, while murmured rhythms strut a murky initial intrigue. A steadier bass and percussive envelopment take hold alongside Jones’ ethereal presence. “Breakdown, on the side of the road,” he sings, with sporadic guitar twangs and sturdy bass ascending to a gorgeous, shoegaze-y expanse, where Jones contemplates: “Another day, slips by, unnoticed.”

Thunderous, fuzzed-out guitar work traverses into a memorable final minute, kicked off by a spoken-word segment depicting AI/VR companion technology that simulates meaningful human experiences and emotional fulfillment, in contrast to earlier depictions of real human emotion. “Weight of Ease” is an invigorating, emotively stirring rock success from SLEEP CLUB.
