Scotland-based solo project Rorksha crafts a captivating sonic landscape on the single “Récif.” The track begins with classical-style acoustic guitar before exploding into an atmospheric electronic progression. Blending heavy bass, ghostly synths, and folk-rock textures amidst dreamy French-spoken vocals, it beautifully mirrors a lyrical promise to stand strong for someone lost in the dark.
Solemn acoustic guitar lines exude a spectral, classical quality initially, bolstered by haunting vocals and a chilly synth element. Wordless vocal mmm-ing builds with momentum thereafter alongside washes of pulsing distortion, furthering the spacious atmospheric mystique. The track fully takes off as the two-minute mark approaches. Steadier rhythmic bounces complement a melodic bass line and expanse of those ghostly synth tones, whirring with alluring entrancement and then fading out as the head-nodding bass and lush guitar elements take the lead.
This mixture of heavy bass, spine-tingling synths, and vibe-y guitars continues to craft a lovely soundscape into around midpoint, when plucky guitar tones and a late-night ambient backing resonance prove affecting in their intertwining. The second half then embraces a more subdued, serene introspection, tonally feeling submerged and tranquil as guitar strums and electronic textures intermingle with memorable cohesion. Succeeding in melody and atmosphere, “Récif” is a fantastic track from Rorksha.
