Chicago-based artist Justin Sconza crafts a sound touting both catchy rock immediacy and memorable thematic introspection with “Native Birds of Guam,” the first single from his newly released album Fantasy. The track channels the Ramones in its punchy rock aesthetic, while its themes tackle the unsettling realization of loss through an unexpected lyrical hook. This anchors Fantasy, a record navigating the friction between tangible reality and the interior mental spaces of imagined experiences.
The particular track’s inspiration stemmed from a phrase Sconza heard: that the native birds of Guam are gone. Perspectives on fleeting existence ensue; the “little dinosaurs” and “birds of a feather” motifs contrast the enduring legacy of evolution with the abruptness of modern extinction, while the array of jangling guitars lead delightfully into the shimmering “but the native birds are gone, where are they now?” questioning. The track is a standout, even on an album with an abundance of highlights.
